hang the air. an immediate response is not given, but
of course, this was to be expected. it would have been
better if she had not said anything at all, for it feels as
if she’d just crossed a line that wasn’t meant to be
stepped over. yet, it was too late. the question had
been said, and lilo needed an answer.}
{maybe, she’d even get some closure….}
“Oh.” There’s something Nani
hadn’t expected today.
Actually, she never expected it.
But it’s her responsibility
to explain these things now. God,
it’s hard to parent. It’s hard
to do most things. Coupled with
Lilo’s query, it’s almost
enough to make Nani cry. But she
usually doesn’t cry in front
of Lilo. Not unless she’s stubbed her
toe or something. “C'mere.”
Nani pulls Lilo into her lap. “There was
absolutely nothing you or me
or anybody could have done for Mom and
Dad. It was a bad night, and
the car was too small, and visibility was bad,
and- y'know, let’s not talk about
this right now. I promise they’re okay, just like
we’re okay. D'you want pizza for dinner?”
